Summary

People lived because she killed。 People died because he lived。

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people。 Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan。 If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways。 Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya--but neither wants to be。

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow。 When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter。 But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds--and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine。

I am conflicted。 First, I'm going to say I could have done without the entirety of Act 1。 It was slow and drawn out and did nothing for me。 The character and world building it did could have been done in 3 chapters instead of 22。 I almost walked away from this book because of it, I was so bored。 Act 2 hits and the action picked up and I got what I was hoping for going into this book。 Adventure, mystery, plot twists, and some unacknowledged sexual tension。 Very good。Act 3 I get confused。 I have a I am conflicted。 First, I'm going to say I could have done without the entirety of Act 1。 It was slow and drawn out and did nothing for me。 The character and world building it did could have been done in 3 chapters instead of 22。 I almost walked away from this book because of it, I was so bored。 Act 2 hits and the action picked up and I got what I was hoping for going into this book。 Adventure, mystery, plot twists, and some unacknowledged sexual tension。 Very good。Act 3 I get confused。 I have a lot of questions about the magic system and "the darkness"。 The end was good though, bit of a cliffhanger。 I feel like this would be better on a second read。 Maybe Act 1 would be more interesting if you understand enough to pick up on the hints and details。 。。。more

This book was really hard to love, it couldn't catch my attention, it couldn't catch my interest。 I tried reading it the first few times earlier this year and I couldn't get pass the first page。 And after trying again and again, I decided to listen to the audiobook, which sometimes works better for me, but no, not even that helped。 🥴But hey, I finished it。 It wasn't the worst, but it was not the best either。 The only interesting character for me was Altair, and he was a side character。 Also, the This book was really hard to love, it couldn't catch my attention, it couldn't catch my interest。 I tried reading it the first few times earlier this year and I couldn't get pass the first page。 And after trying again and again, I decided to listen to the audiobook, which sometimes works better for me, but no, not even that helped。 🥴But hey, I finished it。 It wasn't the worst, but it was not the best either。 The only interesting character for me was Altair, and he was a side character。 Also, the sudden changes of POV' was really confusing for me。 I know each author have their own writing style but atleast finish the chapter before you change it。Okay, so what now? Here I am dissing the book but will I read the sequel? DEFINITELY! Why you ask? ALTAIR!And also because I invested 3 days of my life pushing myself to get through it, so what's another 400+ pages and wasting 3 or more days of my life。 I EXPECT THE NEXT BOOK TO CHANGE MY OPTION OF THIS SERIES。 。。。more

Came in to this with high expectations and this book did so much more O already knew it was amazing just feom a few pages in。I'm so entranced by the plot and how things are unraveling at this point I don't even care anymore that there's 100 pages left and they still haven't kissed, yet。 So completely overwhelmed with the feels and emotions right now, I can't help but release a sigh that weighted everything I felt all throughout。This magical world that weaved the light in every darkness and had a Came in to this with high expectations and this book did so much more O already knew it was amazing just feom a few pages in。I'm so entranced by the plot and how things are unraveling at this point I don't even care anymore that there's 100 pages left and they still haven't kissed, yet。 So completely overwhelmed with the feels and emotions right now, I can't help but release a sigh that weighted everything I felt all throughout。This magical world that weaved the light in every darkness and had added a light dust of sparkle to my book loving heart had ignited and soared。 Just so astonishingly crafted and told that everything at one point felt surreal。 Nothing could have prepared me for the plot twists and turns this story took which had left me gasping and screeching with unbounded shock especially nearing the end。 With only less moments with actual romance in this and the scenes with it were enough to fuel my soul with their palpable chemistry and tension so thick。 It honestly had me reeling and kicking my covers gosh the effect this had in me。 Goosebumps writhing all over my body during scenes I least expected。 The writing so absolutely beautiful honestly words aren't enough everyone needs to read this。Somehow, its harder to write my whole genuine review on this book as its so hard to formulate words but the energy and what i felt was conveyed on all the tabs and notes in this one basically me unleashing my chaotic-ness flamed by this work of art。 。。。more

This book was so disappointing it put me in the mother of all reading slumps。 I know I’m in the minority here but the plot was boring and tired, the characters were equally flat and uninspired, I just don’t understand what the hype is about this series。

3。5 🌟 the writing wasn’t my favorite。 i think that it could’ve been shorter and i wish it had better pacing。 i felt kinda disconnected, but i did love nasir and zafira by the end。 idk when i’ll read the sequel

I was so excited for the first couple of chapters, and then it just went downhill。 I got more than halfway thru and still disliked all of the characters and didn't really understand the plot, and gave up。 I was so excited for the first couple of chapters, and then it just went downhill。 I got more than halfway thru and still disliked all of the characters and didn't really understand the plot, and gave up。 。。。more

I honestly loved this book! It was the perfect mix of fantasy, characterization and story。 It was fun and magical and the story so crazy and amazing that it moved right along。 Pretty much the perfect mix between "The Kingdom of Copper," and "Aladdin。" I honestly loved this book! WOW this one took me a long time to finish but i finally did it!! the characters were definitely the strong point of this book for me, and they all felt so well rounded and human。 i liked the way the twists didn’t come out of nowhere but instead were kind of calm and slow reveals。 i did feel like a big chunk of the book in the middle was very slow (hence why it took me so long to finish it), but once the action was happening it was great。 can’t wait to see what the future holds for zafira and na WOW this one took me a long time to finish but i finally did it!! the characters were definitely the strong point of this book for me, and they all felt so well rounded and human。 i liked the way the twists didn’t come out of nowhere but instead were kind of calm and slow reveals。 i did feel like a big chunk of the book in the middle was very slow (hence why it took me so long to finish it), but once the action was happening it was great。 can’t wait to see what the future holds for zafira and nasir, both separately and as a couple!! kifah is my fav character ofc ok yeah overall really good book!SPOILERY STUFF AHEAD:POOR ALTAIR GET HIM OUT OF THERE!!!! i can’t believe the lion was alive the whole time and is altair’s dad?? and the silver witch is the sultana aka nasir and altair’s mom?? just absolutely wild i also loved kifah’s backstory and i hope she does get revenge against her father in the next book。 benyamin and deen’s deaths were also so sad。 ALSO nasir and the “this means nothing” sir?? get your life together anyway can’t wait to read the next one!! 。。。more

For the majority of the book I felt quite bored。 By the time you get to any actual action the book is over…? Of course this made no difference to me。 But a huge gripe was that usually reading books that include word from other languages those words are used within a context so that non-speakers can still have some sort of understanding what is going on。 There was none of that here。 There is a guide on the authors website but I got tired of having to go back and forth so if I didn’t understand something I just skipped over it in the end or made up what I thought it could be 😂 。。。more

Now that I've been reading fantasy novels consecutively, I've come to realize that I nit pick a lot with how a character is written。 Personally, the term morally gray is my new favorite, I love a tinge of realism in literally any character。 I would've given five stars but I wish Zafira was a bit。。。more realistic? A magical, fantastic story with great, unique characters, who aren't what you first think they are。I absolutely loved the banter and tension between certain characters。 It keeps the story going。The author uses many Arabic words, which I didn't understand。 As much as I love it, when an author includes a different/special language in a book, I'd still love to get a glossar。 I've seen that some editions of this book have it, mine doesn't。 That made reading complicated, cause I couldn't find every w A magical, fantastic story with great, unique characters, who aren't what you first think they are。I absolutely loved the banter and tension between certain characters。 It keeps the story going。The author uses many Arabic words, which I didn't understand。 As much as I love it, when an author includes a different/special language in a book, I'd still love to get a glossar。 I've seen that some editions of this book have it, mine doesn't。 That made reading complicated, cause I couldn't find every word meaning online。Otherwise I enjoyed this story and look forward to book two! 。。。more

A thoroughly engrossing tale especially for someone like me who just craves middle east asian representation。 Though I definitely agree with other reviewers that since the author uses Arabic more endorsingly so the glossary available on the official website should have been included with the book, I can definitely predict that a lot of the readers unfamiliar with the mid east culture will find it very difficult to grasp the story if every other dialogue has some arabic word in it。 For me though A thoroughly engrossing tale especially for someone like me who just craves middle east asian representation。 Though I definitely agree with other reviewers that since the author uses Arabic more endorsingly so the glossary available on the official website should have been included with the book, I can definitely predict that a lot of the readers unfamiliar with the mid east culture will find it very difficult to grasp the story if every other dialogue has some arabic word in it。 For me though I enjoyed it and was definitely entertained。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 OK, so this book was good but not good in so many ways。 Firstly, the preface was so boringly cliché and I could've sworn I'd read the exact same thing before on another book。 But the cover art made up for that, so it can be forgiven。 Secondly, the title sounds great in your head but really weird out loud。 Or maybe that's just me。 So onto the actual story。 I really get what the author was trying to do through the plot and Arabian writing types and things, but I just wasn't getting it。 The story w OK, so this book was good but not good in so many ways。 Firstly, the preface was so boringly cliché and I could've sworn I'd read the exact same thing before on another book。 But the cover art made up for that, so it can be forgiven。 Secondly, the title sounds great in your head but really weird out loud。 Or maybe that's just me。 So onto the actual story。 I really get what the author was trying to do through the plot and Arabian writing types and things, but I just wasn't getting it。 The story was really slow to start。 By the time it had got to the actual journey part we had read like 100 and something pages of the same backstories without any new twists。 I did not like this。 The journey itself was cliché, as was the forbidden romance and falling in love with your supposed killer thing。 It has been done so many times before and the creatures on Sharr were just incredibly unremarkable。 I didn't really understand what they were sometimes。 The fact that she had built an entire world and spent all the time in one location was really annoying me- there were so many places that we didn't even get to see。 Also, I thought it would have been really affective if she did a prologue explaining the six sisters and the lion rather than getting it through parts。 I think it mightve helped in the story as it looses its drama through getting it in so many disjointed pieces。 The banter going through the group would have been great- if I hadn't read it a million times before。 And to be honest, lots of other authors write the banter parts better。I found the characters inner monologues repetitive and tedious at times, especially Nasir。 I get that he was supposed to be really evil yet beating himself up over these memories- but it just got really overdone over time。 I thought more time could've been invested in Altair's mysterious story, and Kifah's or even Benyamin's。 Nasir was very repetitive and used alot in so many stories。 I thought their backstory tragedies were also very overused in many books。 And I thought blood magic could be explored more, it said Zafira could beat anyone yet someone always seems to save her which annoyed me, location annoyed me as it could've been a wider area, the repetitiveness and clichés were annoying, and the way that making all these tiny revelations the characters had happen over and over again in their brains sort of took the drama out of the bigger, more interesting revelations。 And we didn't hear enough about the bad guy。I gave this book three stars because of the writing style。 I loved some of the words and metaphors and beautiful phrases used。 The way she wrote was brilliant in some cases。 When it wasn't overdramatic。 I thought there was something there。 And I liked all the Arabian themes as they were different to the usual- and the native words I found interesting。 So the writing really picked this one up for me, as the plot wasn't too original。 。。。more
